Femope Foundation is a Nigerian based Non-Governmental Organisation working generally on Sexual and Reproductive Health, including Building Capacity of smaller and up-coming Non-governmental organisation.
Over the years, the need to include poverty alleviation became obvious hence, a micro-credit department was introduced in April year 2006.
MISSION: To improve standard of living and build the skills of underserved communities in Nigeria starting from our immediate environment in Mushin Local Government of Lagos State.
GOAL: To alleviate poverty and suffering among the underserved communities, through our various Reproductive Health activities.
Activities: Femope Foundation is implementing small enterprise development program integrating women in petty trading and related services. We are committed to high standard in all our programs.
MEMBERSHIP:
Membership is open to women who are already engaged in petty trading.
LOAN:
Initial loan is N5,000.00 (five Thousand Naira) thereafter in multiples of N5000 based on availability of fund. The loan of N5000.00 is for a period of Six (6) months.
LOAN REPAYMENT:
Repayment starts two weeks after disbursement and will be made regularly on specific day of the week in Twenty-four (24) weekly installments. There is also compulsory savings per week.
However, disbursement may be delayed if any member of the group fails to attend any of the
training sessions.
VOLUNTARY SAVINGS:
Any member is free to contribute any amount as voluntary savings, which could be withdrawn any time it is required by the member.
TRAINING:
Our objectives for carrying out comprehensive training for our clients include:
To enable group members to know and understand themselves better.
To enable credit officer to know each member more closely as he or she and the organization enter into long term relationship.
To give members enough time to save towards the minimum required of 10% of the loan.
Although some members can pay the initial deposit once and for all, but it is
preferable that your savings is built up slowly to develop savings habit.
This initiative is meant to help people in the communities to boost their business. The amount is small but it is for petty traders and for Women, because they are more economically vulnerable.
This programme is a private initiative of: Veterinary Allergy Reference Laboratory based in Pasadena Californian United State of America.
Currently we are servicing over fifty groups of five numbers.
METHODOLOGY
In a group of five numbers a cross – guaranty method is adopted i.e. every member is a guarantor to one of the members.
In this way every member has responsibility to the whole group and any default becomes the liability of the group. This is why members are encouraged during training to choose their group themselves and they must know themselves very well.
It is our hope to increase membership but lack of adequate funding is a barrier.
